Naturopathic Medicine
Naturopathic Medicine blends traditional therapies with modern
advances in health care.
The Healing Power of Nature
The physician’s role is to identify and remove obstacles to health and
to guide the patient’s body toward healing.
First Do No Harm
1) Use the least invasive substances and least intervention necessary to
restore health.
2) Avoid symptom suppression as it can interfere with the healing
process.
3) Respect the inherent life force in diagnosis and treatment.
Identify and Treat the Cause
Underlying causes of disease need to be removed or treated before a
person can recover completely from illness. Symptoms are the body’s
attempt to heal, but are not the cause of disease. Naturopathic
medicine addresses the underlying causes of disease, rather than to the
symptoms.
Treat the Whole Person
Causes may occur on many levels, including physical, emotional, mental,
and spiritual. Every patient is regarded as unique-as someone with self-
healing potential. The first question often asked is, "What were the
circumstances in this patient's life that set the stage for this illness?
The Physician as Teacher
The physician’s major role is to educate and encourage the patient to
take responsibility for his or her own health.
It is the patient, not the doctor, who ultimately creates or
accomplishes healing.
Prevention
The ultimate goal of naturopathic medicine is prevention.
The physician assesses risk factors, environmental factors and
hereditary susceptibility to disease and makes appropriate interventions
to avoid further harm and risk to the patient. The emphasis is on
building health, rather than fighting disease.
